DENISE SANTIAGO

Recipe for success

The entrepreneur Denise Santiago, director of CiaEco, is well known in the tourism field by her dynamism and innovative vision. She decided to open her own travel agency ten years ago. Back then she realized the importance of ecotourism for a growing public with increased environmental awareness, desire to explore natural environments and recognition of the importance of engaging in healthy activities. The understanding of the characteristics of this new sector of the tourism industry, allied with a highly professional service and friendliness have made CiaEco one of the biggest and most respected companies of this field in Brazil.

The work that has been developed by Denise Santiago is today considered a reference in Brazil for ecotourism businessmen and for clients who frequently travel with CiaEco and are part of the company’s loyal costumers.

By the end of the 90s, Denise Santiago realized the enormous potential of the ecotourism in Brazi. The combination of large and rich natural resources and cultural heritage, the growing interest of people toward ecotourism, as well as the more stable Brazilian currency was a perfect setting in which Denise decided to start her own business.

The starting point was intense research and study - courses on travel agency management, information systems, finance and marketing. As groundation was set, Denise could start her business with confidence. "I had experience dealing with travelers and organizing groups. But to start my own business I had to get prepared. I've done an extensive benchmark as well as analyzed the field's opportunities" remarks Denise.

Denise targeted clients who wanted to experience nature with safety and comfort and not only those who aimed adventure no matter in which conditions. And for this segment, Denise established CiaEco in 1999, formerly called Companhia Nacional de Ecoturismo.

In the past years, ecological tourism in Brazil grew in importance, getting more professional and diversified options, reaching sports lovers, adventurous tourists and the more sophisticated ones. Along with it also grew the importance given to safety, and on 2004 ABETA ((Brazilian Association of Ecotourism and Adventure Tourism Companies) was founded, having CiaEco as one of its members.

CiaEco was prepared for this scenery and could go beyond the basics. It offered packages that combined quality with safety, but also gave a special attention for each and every client. For Denise Santiago, knowing the expectations and the preferences of the clients increases the chances of satisfaction. “CiaEco´s consultancy team is trained to care for each detail of the costumer’s travel, provide all information he may need and explain how the services will be provided, making sure the client feels safe” says Denise.

Satisfied clients are a good result, but CiaEco aims higher, and looks for enchanted ones. Spoiling a bit the client by offering him champagne at the sunset shows that he’s not just a number to us. Coming back from a trip without any problem, filled with new experiences and feeling the sensation of being well cared, is what make the clients return to CiaEco.

After these 10 years, Denise knows this is the recipe for success.

ANDREA KIERMANN “The man must travel by himself, and not through stories, images, books or TV. He must go with his own feet and eyes, to understand what is his. So one day he’ll plant his own trees and give them its proper value.”
“Knowing the cold to enjoy the warmth. And also the opposite. Feeling the distance and the lack of shelter allows one to feel good under his own roof. A man must travel to unknown places to break his arrogance that makes us see the world as we imagine, and not how it is or may be. What makes us professors and doctors of what we have not seen? We should all be students, and simply see.” Amyr Klink
